Opinion: 5 Reasons Why Chelsea Will Beat Real Madrid In The Champions League Return Leg.

Chelsea FC and Real Madrid are set to go head-to-head in the second leg of their Champions League semifinal clash. With the first leg ending with one all draw, the tie is far from finished. Both teams know that they have it all to the in the return leg set to take place at Stamford Bridge this week.

With Chelsea playing at home after securing an away goal in the first leg, they would feel a bit more confident going into the return leg. While it is not an easy task to successfully predict the winners of a football match, for the reasons provided below, I am of the opinion that Chelsea will beat Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge to advance into the final.

With this in mind, lets us examine the five reasons why I opined that Chelsea would beat Real Madrid.

5. Chelsea's form at the moment is good.

Chelsea Football Club are one of the most inform teams in Europe at the moment. Their form has seen them lose just two games under Thomas Tuchel. Since he took charge of Chelsea, they have managed to take care of business against some of the best teams in Europe. Since his take-over, they have gone from below the top four to within a few points off Leicester City in third place on the league table.

They have beaten the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Atlético Madrid and others in that run of games. They are in the FA Cup final which speaks volume of their form at the moment. If they carry on with this form to the return leg, it is safe to say that they would get the required result to dump Real Madrid out of the competition and progress to the final.

4. Their defensive record under Tuchel.

One of the smartest strategies in any football game is to avoid conceding goals. Once you do not conceded goals, going forward to get one becomes a bit easy. What's more is that if a team hasn’t conceded a goal, one goal of their own would be enough to do the job.

This is one key area that Chelsea are so good at doing at the moment. Since the arrival of Tuchel, Chelsea have kept the most clean sheets in the Premier League. In fact, they seem not to know how to concede goals.

Chelsea can afford to play out a goalless draw and qualify on the away goal rule if they intend to. It won’t be mission impossible because they are good at keeping clean sheets. For this reason, don’t expect them to concede too many goals. Hence, they could end up beating Madrid.

3. The hunger in the team.

Chelsea is a hungry team at the moment. The players, owner and the manager want to win a trophy. Although, they are set to play Leicester City in the FA CUP final, winning the Champions League will be a bigger accomplishment for them. What this mean is that they are hungry for success and are therefore motivated to get success.

It is not as if Real Madrid are not hungry too. But for a team that has won the UCL just once, the hunger for another one is expected to be higher than that of a team that has won it 13 times. Beating Real Madrid will open another opportunity to another trophy. For this reason, they will beat Real Madrid.

2. The help of an away goal.

In a competition like the UEFA Champions League, away goals are very important in the knock-out stages. Chelsea knowing this got an away goal at the Alfredo De Stefano Stadium in Madrid. With the help of the away goal, the tie is slightly in favor of Chelsea now. A simple 0 – 0 draw will be enough to see Chelsea go through.

Considering their form against big teams, they can achieve it. They have managed to shutout Atlético over two legs, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and others. So, shutting out Real Madrid should not be difficult. Hence, they will beat Madrid and qualify.

1. Possible absence of key players for Madrid.

Aside from the fact that Real Madrid are coming to England, they could be missing some important players in their team. Their most experienced defender Sergio Ramos has been out of action for a while now. His partner Rafael Varane also picked up an injury in their La Liga fixture on Saturday. Even if both players make the team, it would be expected that they lack rhythm and proper fitness.

This is in addition to the recent recovery of former Chelsea player Eden Hazard, who has been out of action for quite a while. He does not have the fitness to really affect the game in Madrid's favor. For this reason, Chelsea will get the victory.

While I have categorically stated that predicting the winner of a football match is not easy, I am of the opinion that for the reasons above, Chelsea will beat Real Madrid in the return leg.
