Most businesses try to get rank on Google at all cost which may result in a penalty from Google manual action or algorithm update. It is however noted that you can avoid this penalty if you are updated on new algorithm update, and respond to manual action message on search console.

However, getting a penalty from Google does not mean an end to your revenue. You can still recover from the penalty and slowly move your business back to the status it was before.  This article will help you with some tips on how to recover from Google penalty.

How to recover from google penalty

  • Find all links to your website

Backlinks are the major reason google penalize businesses. Some backlinks are considered low quality because they come from irrelevant or unnatural sources. So, if Google gave you a penalty, the first thing to do is to find all backlinks known by google.

Google search console can help you with the list of links to the website. You will find all your backlinks under the link section of your Search Console dashboard. There you can download all your backlinks or import it to any of your favourite backlink analysis tools.

  • Analyze your backlinks

There are many tools out there you can use to analyze your backlinks. one of the tools I  recommended is SEMrush. It can give you a lot of details about your site backlinks, including those that are of low quality.

While analyzing your backlinks, you should focus on with do-follow attribute. Because Google uses that attribute to rank page.

  • Find the bad backlinks

Once you have analysed your backlinks, you need to identify the bad ones. Now, this may be difficult as you may need to verify all backlinks one after the other to locate the bad ones. Though some backlink tools do help to identify low-quality links.

Most bad backlinks do come from blog comments and other unnatural sources. When you check each backlink, you will notice some of them are not in line with Google guidelines

  • Remove bad backlinks to your site

There are several ways to remove backlinks. the best way will be by contacting the business owner and request a backlink to be removed. You can find their contact either on the contact page of their website.

If you are reaching a webmaster through email address, ensure you use your company’s email address. This will prove to him that you own the website. A good webmaster will help you remove the links once you are polite and specific in your message.

If you cant reach a webmaster, disavow the bad backlinks. You can submit any link you want to remove to Google Disavow Link tool. All you need is to compile those bad inks in a simple .txt file. You will get a response to your request within 2-4 weeks

Getting penalized by google doesn’t mean you can recover. Many great websites have gotten this penalty and have recovered. I believe With the tips on this post, you should help your business back to what it used to be.
