Google search console AKA Google webmaster tool is a free tool available for website owner; it allows them to monitor the progress of their websites. The tool allows website owners to see the number of views. It also helps them strategize on how they can optimize their website.

This tool is very important to every online business out there. In order words, whether you are a digital marketer, business owner, web designer, content creator or app developer, GSC will help you a lot in your business.

As a beginner, this tool might be confusing as there are lots of graphs and tabs that you need to understand. This article will help you understand how Google search console works. Let’s get started.


Setting up search console


Adding a website in google search console

  • Navigate to Google search console.
  • Log in to your Google account. Ensure you log in in using a business account if it is a business website
  • Select “add a property”
  • Select the type of property you want to enter. There are three of them:
    • URL-prefix property: for example https://www.xnxnxjj.com or http//www.xxxx.com.
    • Domain property: www prefix is ignored in this one. Examples are m.xxxxx.com, xxxxxx.com.
    • Google-hosted property: These are Google domains like BlogSpot websites.
  • Enter the domain name of the website i.e. www.xxxx.com or enter the URL of your website
  • Click continue
  • Select a way to verify your website. You can select from the following:
    • GA tracking Code: upload the tracking code to the head tag of your website
    • GTM container snippet: add the snippet to the head tag of your website
    • HTML file upload: uploading your website HTML file online

Features of Google search console


This is the page that will be shown to you when never you sign in to Google Search Console. The page has the summary stats on your websites. Here you can see the overview of the performance coverage and enhancements.


This page has data on your websites clicks and visits.  There are two charts on this page; the first one is where you will find the total clicks, total impression average clicks and average position. All have different colours to differentiate the in the chart.

Total click: total click shows the number of clicks a site has. When someone clicks on your link from Google search or any link in your website, it will count as a link

Total impression: this shows the total number of visits to a website. Your page URL can generate impression when it shows up on search engine results.

Average position: this means your page SEO rank. This is the average position a page in your website has been ranked, for instance, if this post ranks 3 and 5 in Google search result the average position,

Average CTR: this means the Average Click-Through Rate. This is calculated by dividing the number of clicks by impression

The second chart has data on SEO related queries. Details in this chart can be downloaded in a spreadsheet format. Here you can find out the number of click and impression based on pages, countries, devices, search appearances and dates.


URL's inspection

This feature allows you to submit URL directly to Google for crawling and indexing. When you submit a page URL through this tool, you can find out if the page has been index. You can also request for indexing if your page has not been crawled.

Note: you may need to submit site map before you can use this feature.


This feature allows you to know the number of pages that have been indexed and the ones you need to act on. Here you can find your pages under these categories

Valid: this means they have been crawled and indexed by Google bots

Valid with Warning: this means the page or pages have been crawled but there was an error at some point

Error: these means your pages have issues that need fixing. Try to fix this issue when you notice them

Excluded: pages under this, have not been crawled or indexed.

Details of your page coverage status are can be seen in the detail section. There you can find out the status of your pages.

 For instance, this website has 12 exclude pages 5 pages that were discovered but not indexed, 4 pages have an alternate page with canonical tag, 1 was crawled but not indexed, 1 page was blocked by robot.txt and 1 page with a redirect.

The site also has 6 valid pages: 4 were submitted and indexed while 2 were indexed but not submitted in a sitemap.

When you click through these details, you will see the affected pages.



A sitemap an XML file has the list of page or URLs in a website, it informs search engines about the pages on the website that can be crawled.

 When you generate your site map, submit it in the sitemap section of Google search console. This will help goggle in discovering pages on your website.


This feature allows you to remove content from Google search.

When you click on new request, submit the URL of the page you want to remove. Then watch the status of the pages. If any of your pages were outdated, you will see it under the outdated section of the page.


Core web vitals

Here you can check your site usability on both mobile and desktop. It will also tell you where you need to optimize your websites. Ensure you optimize your website for mobile usage through this feature. You can also try out PageSpeed insight on both mobile and desktop through this section


Mobile usability

This feature helps you with data on pages that are optimized for mobile uses. You can also get the number of impression from mobile through this feature. Here you will see the number of valid pages and those with errors.

If you did not see any details on this page, it means your website is not optimized for mobile SEO. Once they are optimized they will be included in the valid section and if any page has issues that need solving, they will appear under error.

Manual action and security issues

This feature will tell you if your site has any manual action or security issues preventing it from appearing in search engine.

Legacy and tool report

This section contains tools that are useful to webmasters and developers. Tools in this section include:

 Crawl stats: this tool shows how often Google crawls your site and how many request Google bots are making. You can choose to reduce the crawl rate especially when your site is overloaded with Google crawl issues.

 Robot.txt tester: this tool is used to manually test your robot.txt file; this will help you know if there are URLs blocked by the robot.txt syntax.


URL parameter tool: this tool can help you tell Google any special parameter you are using in your page URLs. This will enable crawl your page better. This tool is made for advance users only; it is advised you don’t use this too when you don’t know how it works as you may hurt your site crawling.

International targeting: this tool help you set a target for your Google search results.

Messages: here you can read all search console related messages that have to do with your property. All messages sent to you email will also be seen here. 

Links: Here, you will find out which site is linked to your and what text they used in linking your site. Here you have data on; top linked pages, top linking site, top linking text and top linked pages
